Selling Gold Coins in Dehradun — What You Need to Know
Gold coins are valued on purity and weight — not on the original purchase price, the design, or the bank that sold them. Here is what to know before selling coins in Dehradun.
Valuation
How gold coins are valued
The same formula that applies to all gold.
Payout = pure gold weight × today's MCX rate.
A 24K (999 purity) 10-gram coin contains 9.99 grams of pure gold (10g × 0.999). The coin's design, origin, brand, or packaging are not factors in the price — only purity (karatage) and net gold weight.
Indicative Value — final price determined after physical testing.
What we buy
Types of gold coins IGoldcash buys
MMTC-Pamp & BIS hallmarked
Government-issued or hallmarked coins (MMTC-Pamp, SBI Gold, ICICI Gold). Usually 24K / 999. Certificate and packaging help but are not required.
Temple & prasad coins
Lakshmi-Ganesh, Tirupati or Vaishno Devi, and Diwali puja coins. Purity varies (22K–24K) and is priced on the tested result, not an assumption.
Jeweller-issued coins
Coins from Tanishq, Malabar, Kalyan, Ghanshyam and others — usually 22K or 24K. Purity is tested independently regardless of brand.
International gold coins
Krugerrand, Canadian Maple Leaf, American Eagle, Australian Gold Nugget. Tested on gold content — no collector premium is paid.
Purity
The pricing difference: 24K vs 22K gold coins
Not all gold coins are the same purity, and that changes the selling price.
| Coin type | Typical purity | Gold content per 10g | Rate applied |
|---|---|---|---|
| MMTC-Pamp (24K) | 999 fineness | 9.99g pure gold | 24K MCX rate |
| BIS hallmarked (24K) | 995 fineness | 9.95g pure gold | 24K MCX rate |
| Tanishq / Malabar (22K) | 916 fineness | 9.16g pure gold | 22K MCX rate |
| Temple / prasad coins | Varies (test required) | Depends on test result | Rate per tested purity |
| Jeweller gift coins | Varies (test required) | Depends on test result | Rate per tested purity |
This is why independent purity testing matters — know your coin's purity before you negotiate. Banks that sell gold coins (SBI, HDFC, ICICI) typically do not buy them back; jewellers may, but often at a lower rate or only with the original packaging and certificate. IGoldcash tests the coin and pays the current MCX rate, with no original-purchase conditions.
Paperwork
Does the certificate or original box matter?
For pricing, no — for speed, a little.
- Pricing is based on tested purity, not what the certificate claims. Even a certified 999 coin is tested independently.
- Certificates speed up the process — a tamper-evident assay card (Pamp Suisse style) makes testing faster because the card itself is reliable. Not required, though.
- Original packaging carries no premium. A coin outside its box is worth the same as one still sealed.
The premium
The premium you paid vs what you get back
When you buy a gold coin from a bank or jeweller, you typically pay the MCX rate at the time of purchase, plus making or minting charges (usually 2–10%), plus 3% GST. When you sell the same coin at a professional gold buyer, you receive the MCX rate on the day of selling, multiplied by the pure gold weight in the coin.
The minting charges and GST paid at purchase are not recoverable when selling — a known cost of buying gold in coin form rather than as bars or jewellery with lower making charges. When MCX prices have risen significantly since your purchase, that increase can more than offset the premium paid: many people who bought coins in 2020–2022 are selling at a comfortable profit in 2026.

Common questions
01Does IGoldcash buy gold coins in Dehradun?+

02How much will I get for my gold coin?+
The payout is pure gold weight × today's MCX rate. A 24K (999) 10g coin holds 9.99g of pure gold (10g × 0.999). Call for today's exact rate before your visit so you can estimate.
03Can I sell a gold coin without its certificate or original packaging?+
Yes. Certificates and packaging are not required. Every coin is tested independently using professional purity testing, so purity is confirmed regardless of documentation.
04Will I get a collector's premium for a rare or old gold coin?+
